Climate Adaptation
The degradation of ecosystems threatens the essential benefits they provide for human and planetary health (known as “ecosystem services”). Climate crisis mitigation efforts currently emphasize reducing industrial activities to decrease global greenhouse gas emissions. However, as many scholars and critics agree, these efforts are insufficient. Ongoing prevention and reduction efforts are not keeping pace with the rate of anthropogenic change. We now require climate adaptation strategies.
Ecosystem Services
-
Provisioning
Provisioning ecosystem services encompass the tangible products derived from ecosystems that are essential for human survival.
-
Regulating
Regulating ecosystem services involve the natural processes that help maintain environmental conditions favourable for life.
-
Cultural
Cultural ecosystem services are the benefits people obtain from ecosystems through aesthetic enjoyment and spiritual enrichment.
-
Supporting
Supporting ecosystem services are fundamental processes that sustain other ecosystem services, making them possible.
Manufactured Ecosystems combines integrated visions of both nature and technology using biomimetics – solutions transferred from biological systems to engineered systems – and bio-inspired design to support, enhance, or fully transform an ecosystem.
The reality is that if our natural ecosystem services stopped functioning today, we would be unable to replace their essential provisioning, regulating, supporting, and cultural functions with existing technological innovations.
Our success in Climate Adaptation lies with our ability to harness all required knowledge systems.
We must learn from Nature, Technology, Imagination, and Each Other.
Let’s Work Together
We’re always looking for new opportunities and are comfortable working internationally. Please get in touch and one of our project managers will contact you about beginning the proposal process.
